Basil is native to Africa, Asia, and the Pacific Islands. From there, it made its way to Europe and India via the Middle East. Basil is an herb that can be used whole, chopped and turned into a paste, or dried. Commonly used raw when fresh, Basil can be added to bread or salad and can also be served on top of pizza, pasta, chicken and fish. Basil has high levels of vitamin K.
